Stanton Turns Over Board Chairmanship to Wieder

Supervisor Roger R. Stanton, who is thinking of running for Congress, turned over the chairmanship of the Board of Supervisors Tuesday to Harriett M. Wieder, who also is thinking of running for Congress.

Stanton joked that as he worked his way through City Council jobs in Fountain Valley, Wieder was a step ahead of him in the same jobs in Huntington Beach. She was elected supervisor in 1978, two years before he was.

“Gee, Harriett, if there is a special election for you (for Congress) this year, will I follow you there, too?” Stanton joked.

Wieder is considering running for the 42nd District seat that will be vacated by Rep. Daniel Lungren (R-Long Beach) if he is confirmed as state treasurer. Stanton is thinking of running for the 40th District seat because Rep. Robert Badham (R-Newport Beach) will not run for reelection.

In his “state of the county” address, Stanton said that last year was one of “significant achievement” for the supervisors and cited the building of a new jail annex next to the main jail in Santa Ana and the decisions to expand a branch jail in the City of Orange and build a new one in Gypsum and Coal canyons.

He recited other actions taken by the supervisors in the areas of community safety and transportation. Stanton also noted that when planned incorporations in the county are complete, for the first time more land in the county will be within city borders than in unincorporated territory.
