Mitterrand’s ‘Love’ Shirt Shows Style in Paris Boutiques
A silk shirt printed with black-and-white love messages to French President Francois Mitterrand is the latest rage in Paris designer boutiques and yet another boost to a reelection campaign he has not yet entered.
About 200 of the shirts carrying the slogan “J’aime Ton-Ton” (“I love Ton-Ton”) have been designed by Marie Beltrami, a Mitterrand admirer, and will sell for nearly $150. “Ton-Ton,” an affectionate diminutive for “uncle” in French, has been Mitterrand’s nickname since 1981 when it was used as a code signal by security forces.
