Pacific 10 Basketball Roundup : Third-Ranked Arizona Takes Out Loss on Cal, 80-51

Sean Elliott scored 23 points and Tom Tolbert had 20 as third-ranked Arizona trounced California, 80-51, Thursday night in a Pacific 10 Conference game at Tucson.

Arizona (13-1 overall, 3-0 in the Pac-10), playing its first game since a 61-59 loss at New Mexico that cost the Wildcats the No. 1 ranking, used a 21-0 run midway in the first half to blow the game open. The Wildcats led, 43-12, at halftime.

Consecutive layups by Tolbert, the first with 13:38 left in the half, started Arizona’s run, and his dunk with 5:05 remaining gave the Wildcats a 29-4 bulge. Hartmut Ortmann’s free throw with 4:46 left ended Cal’s drought.

Arizona increased the halftime lead to 31 when Harvey Mason tipped in his own miss as the buzzer sounded.

California (4-7, 1-2), held scoreless for 10 minutes 10 seconds in the first half, tied a McHale Center record by making only 4 field goals in 29 attempts before halftime.

Despite a 17-2 run to open the second half, the Bears got no closer than 15 points.

Matt Beeuwsaert scored 15 points and Bryant Walton added 13 for the Bears.

Arizona State 104, Stanford 80--Eric Holloway scored 20 points and the Sun Devils beat the Cardinal at Tempe, Ariz.

The Sun Devils (9-3, 3-0) had a 69-67 lead when they broke open the game with an 11-1 surge midway through the second half.

The score was tied, 46-46, at halftime, but Holloway put the Sun Devils ahead to stay by scoring 7 of their first 10 points in the second half.

Greg Butler had 22 of his 28 points in the first half for Stanford (10-4, 2-1), and Todd Lichti added 19 points.
