Serviceman Killed When Motorcycle Hits Phone Pole

A 19-year-old serviceman assigned to Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino County was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle on Imperial Highway near the intersection of Nohl Ranch Road in Anaheim, authorities said Saturday.

Anaheim police said Daniel Charles Briggs of Mt. Prospect, Ill., suffered major head and upper body injuries when his 1987 Kawasaki hit a curb about 11:45 p.m. Friday, skidded into a telephone pole and slammed into the rear of a Ford pickup truck stopped at the intersection.

The driver of the pickup, a 16-year-old boy, was unhurt.

Police said Briggs, who was wearing a helmet, was in critical condition when emergency personnel arrived at the scene. He died at Kaiser Foundation Hospital--Anaheim. It was not known what caused him to lose control of the motorcycle.
