A convicted Mafia gangster died Saturday in a hail of gunfire on a street in Palermo, Sicily, the second killing linked to the end of the trial of about 450 alleged Mafiosi.

Police said Antonino Casella, 44, was shot by two gunmen on a motorcycle who drew up alongside his car in the outskirts of the city.

Casella was sentenced to 6 1/2 years in jail when the 22-month Mafia trial ended in December but was freed because he had spent an equivalent period in pretrial custody.

Another defendant, Antonino Ciulla, was shot two hours after being acquitted and released by the Palermo court, which handed down 19 life terms and sentences totaling 2,700 years for 319 other gangsters.
