Iowa Baseball Team, Des Moines Approve Upgrade to Taylor Stadium
The Iowa Cubs and the city of Des Moines have come to terms on a stadium improvement plan that will keep the American Assn. club in Iowa for at least another five years.
At a cost of about $1 million, the city will add 2,000 seats to Sec Taylor Stadium and install a new parking lot, with the improvements completed in time for the next season. Iowa Cubs President Ken Grandquist, who earlier said he would move the club if the city didn’t build a domed stadium or improve Sec Taylor, said he was pleased with the agreement.
“I told them if they do the things like parking and seating, I will exercise my option for five years on our lease right now,” he said, adding that he would ask for an additional five-year extension. The club pays $16,000 a year rent for the stadium.
Grandquist said he hopes that by the end of another 10 years, the city will commit itself to a domed stadium.
