Man, 27, Killed in $300,000 Fire at Anaheim Club

Flames raced through an Anaheim entertainment club early Sunday, killing one man and keeping firefighters from entering the building for more than an hour, authorities said.

The fire was reported at 8:14 a.m. at Big John’s Billiards and Pizza, a popular venue for rock bands in the 800 block of E. Orangethorpe Avenue. Structure damage was estimated at $300,000.

Moments after firefighters arrived, the plywood roof on the 12,000-square-foot building caved in, leaving its concrete block walls standing and creating a “firebox of intense heat,” Anaheim Fire Capt. Randy Goldsmith said. Firefighters later found the body of Steve Scott Ayotte, 27, of Anaheim, believed to be an employee of the club.
