College Basketball Roundup : Boston College Triumphs; St. John’s Snaps Its Slump

Dana Barros scored 27 points to lead Boston College to an 85-70 Big East Conference basketball victory over Seton Hall Tuesday night at Boston.

The victory raised Boston College’s record to 9-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference. Seton Hall fell to 12-5, 1-2.

Jamie Benton added 22 points and Tyrone Scott 15 for the Eagles. Mark Bryant led Seton Hall with 20 points but fouled out with 2:43 remaining.

Ramon Ramos scored 13 points and pulled in 12 rebounds for Seton Hall, and John Morton added 12 points for the Pirates.

The Eagles missed their first eight shots and didn’t score until 3:30 into the game. But Barros hit a jumper and a three-pointer, and Benton added a three-point goal to put Boston College ahead, 8-6. From there, Boston College opened up a 48-27 lead at halftime, and Seton Hall got no closer than 12.

St. John’s 73, Rutgers 55--Shelton Jones scored a game-high 22 points, 14 in the second half, at New York as the Redmen handed the Scarlet Knights their sixth straight loss.

The Redmen, who had lost two straight to Big East rivals Villanova and Pittsburgh, raised their record to 9-3, while Rutgers fell to 3-9.

Greg Harvey chipped in with 12 points, and Matt Brust added 10 for the Redmen. Tom Savage topped Rutgers with 11 points, and Darren Campbell added 10.

St. John’s led, 29-23, at the half and blew it open in the second half, taking a 28-point lead, 58-30.

West Virginia 78, North Carolina Charlotte 52--West Virginia forward Tyrone Shaw scored 19 points, and North Carolina Charlotte went ice-cold from the field as the Mountaineers romped at Morgantown, W. Va.

The Mountaineers (9-4) hit 55% of their shots compared to just 33% for North Carolina Charlotte (also 9-4). No 49er player scored in double figures.

West Virginia took an 8-6 lead and never trailed again. A 16-4 scoring spree put the Mountaineers up, 22-10, and they led, 38-24, at halftime.

Georgia Tech 111, Georgia State 82--Dennis Scott scored 29 points and tied a school record with eight three-pointers to lead Georgia Tech at Atlanta.

Scott, a freshman guard, tied the three-point record set by Mark Price in 1983 against Virginia.

Georgia Tech (12-2) took the lead for good at 20-18 with 13 minutes left in the first half on a three-pointer by Scott. The Yellow Jackets led, 50-39, at intermission and were not threatened. Georgia State is 3-8.
