NBA Roundup : Dallas Gives MacLeod 600th Win

Mark Aguirre scored 35 points and Roy Tarpley grabbed a club-record 23 rebounds Wednesday night to lead the Dallas Mavericks to a 110-108 win over the Indiana Pacers, giving Coach John MacLeod his 600th National Basketball Assn. victory.

MacLeod, 600-553 in 15 seasons, is the eighth NBA coach to reach the milestone--and the second this week. Lenny Wilkens of the Cleveland Cavaliers won his 600th game Tuesday night.

“It’s a milestone, sure,” said MacLeod, who won 579 games with the Phoenix Suns. “I feel very fortunate to have lasted this long. The juices are still flowing, though. I feel I have a long way to go.”

Wednesday night at Dallas, the score was tied, 97-97, with 5:09 left when Brad Davis and Aguirre scored to give Dallas a 101-97 lead with 4:16 left. The Mavericks then extended the lead to 107-99 with 1 1/2 minutes to play and went on to win their 11th straight at home.

Tarpley, who finished with 12 points while hitting just 4 of 18 shots, got 11 of his rebounds in the second quarter, also a team record, and 13 in the first half.

Boston 143, Detroit 105--After losing by 23 points when the teams met Dec. 4 at Detroit, the Celtics answered in this game at Boston by outscoring the Pistons, 43-22, in the third quarter to blow open a see-saw battle.

The Celtics erupted after Adrian Dantley sank a hook shot to give Detroit a 65-63 lead at the start of the second half, and went on to score their 20th consecutive home-court victory over the Pistons. The streak dates to Dec. 19, 1982.

Boston’s Kevin McHale scored 15 of his 31 points and Larry Bird had 10 of his 28 in the third quarter.

Phoenix 117, Houston 106--Jay Humphries scored 11 of his season-high 26 points during a fight-marred third quarter, and Larry Nance had 10 of his 19 in the game’s final 8:08 to lead the Suns at Phoenix.

Guards Sleepy Floyd of Houston and Jeff Hornacek of Phoenix were ejected after starting a fight that spread into the stands. The incident took place with 2:20 left in the third quarter, after Hornacek scored on a layup following a Phoenix steal.

Philadelphia 104, New Jersey 95--Cliff Robinson scored 29 points at Philadelphia as the 76ers, despite a 32-12 run by New Jersey that wiped out a 20-point deficit, kept the Nets winless on the road this season.

The Nets, who are 0-13 on the road in 1987-88 and have lost 22 straight away from home since last season, trailed, 60-40, in the first minute of the second half. Eventually, two free throws by Dwayne Washington with six seconds remaining in the third period tied it, 72-72.

A long jumper at the buzzer by Roy Hinson gave the 76ers the lead again, and they scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter for an 82-72 advantage.

Seattle 144, Golden State 115--Xavier McDaniel scored 19 of his 30 points in the first quarter at Seattle as the SuperSoncis rolled to a 144-115 victory over the Warriors.

It was the 13th straight home win for the SuperSonics. The Warriors played without Ralph Sampson, who flew to Houston for the birth of his child, and lost their 15th straight on the road.

Atlanta 120, San Antonio 110--Dominique Wilkins scored 48 points, hitting 18 of 18 free throws, to pace the Central Division-leading Hawks at San Antonio.

Utah 116, Portland 104--Karl Malone scored 31 points, hitting 15 of 19 from the free-throw line, to lead the Jazz at Salt Lake City.

Steve Johnson led Portland with 22 points, while Clyde Drexler added 20 and Jerome Kersey 16.
