Share

The state controller’s office has mailed the last batch of 135,000 tax rebate checks, completing the distribution of a $1.1-billion state surplus to 11.15 million taxpayers. The state withheld a total of $38.5 million in refunds to 350,000 people who owed the state back taxes or delinquent child support payments. More than 150,000 checks were returned to the controller’s office as “undeliverable,” Davis said. His office is working with the state Franchise Tax Board in an attempt to find current addresses for the taxpayers. Some of the checks will be sent along with 1987 tax forms. The cost of the rebate program added up to $7.6 million, which includes $4.7 million for processing and mailing the checks and $2.9 million for calculating the amounts owed each taxpayer.
