Two Escondido elementary schools will begin year-round class schedules next summer, school trustees decided Thursday night.

The board had been considering a proposal to put all 17 elementary schools in the district on year-round schedules, and had yielded to teacher and parent opposition by narrowing the list to four schools.

The two schools slated to begin the year-round schedule in July are Conway Elementary, where a majority of staff and parents approved the extended school year, and Miller Elementary, where school officials said that no additional portable classrooms or other temporary measures could meet the expected number of students next fall.

The two other schools that were considered but dropped from year-round scheduling were Oak Hill and Central elementary schools.

District spokeswoman Shirley Thayer said that all of the elementary schools are at or over capacity. However, many parents with children in higher grades who are on traditional summer vacation schedule protested the year-round elementary school schedule.

Thayer said that parents and faculty members also have turned thumbs down on split schedules in the elementary grades, a change that would have required early-session students to start classes at 6 a.m. and late-session students to stay in school until 5:30 p.m.
