UCSD Guard Sets Free-Throw Mark
UC San Diego guard Rob Rittgers made 24 straight free throws after 12 technical fouls were called against Menlo College because of a bench-clearing fight during a nonconference game at San Diego Saturday night.
Rittgers finished the game 30 of 30 from the line, setting NCAA Division III records for consecutive free throws in a game and overall total. The Tritons made 53 of 59 free throws and won, 110-85.
Rittgers’ 24 straight free throws turned a 27-16 UCSD deficit into a 40-30 lead with 6:48 left in the first half. Menlo was awarded four technical foul shots because of the fight and made three.
