The State : Initiative OKd for June Ballot
An initiative to allow for greater growth in state budgets by adjusting a voter-imposed spending limit has qualified for the June 7 primary election ballot, Secretary of State March Fong Eu said. She said a random sampling of petitions showed 720,542 valid signatures of registered voters, “well in excess” of the 654,954 signatures needed to qualify for the ballot. The initiative, backed by teacher unions, PTA groups and Supt. of Public Instruction Bill Honig, would adjust the spending limit, which was made part of the Constitution by voters in 1979, so that more money could be spent on schools and other state programs.
