Local News in Brief : Police Revive Baby

Share

A baby girl who had stopped breathing Wednesday was revived by Los Angeles police officers at the Devonshire Division station in Northridge after a couple ran into the station and placed the baby on the front desk, police said.

“All of a sudden this woman came in screaming,” desk officer Vicky Jackman said. “I couldn’t understand her. Then she put the baby down in front of me. The baby wasn’t breathing and had no pulse.”

Hearing the screaming, Sgt. Hans Rollenhagen ran to the front desk with his gun drawn, thinking someone was being attacked--until he saw the baby, who had turned blue. Soon Jackman and Rollenhagen, with the help of other officers, began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the child. About 20 seconds later, she started breathing and then crying, Jackman said.

The girl, 20-month-old Kimberly Genner, was transported to Granada Hills Medical Center, where doctors determined she was in good condition after suffering a convulsion, police said.

Police said the girl’s father, Paul Genner, was driving near the police station when the baby stopped breathing. “I guess it was lucky for them they were in this area,” Sgt. Chuck Helm said.
