Vandals Cause Sewage Spill Into Lagoon

Share

About 300,000 gallons of raw sewage poured into the Buena Vista Lagoon between Oceanside and Carlsbad on Wednesday night, when vandals threw rocks into a manhole causing it to overflow, County Health Services spokesman Lyn Wallis said.

Sewage flowed from the manhole in the 3800 block of Plaza Drive in Carlsbad into a nearby creek that runs into the lagoon, he said.

The spill was contained at 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

Because the lagoon is not a recreational facility, warning signs were not posted. “But, 300 yards south and 100 yards north of where the lagoon pours into the ocean, signs were posted until tests can prove the water is once again safe for swimming and other activities,” Wallis said.
