A 22-year-old San Diego man was shot in the arm by a police officer after he pointed a cocked pistol at the officer, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.

The victim, whom police identified as David Vidrio, and an unidentified companion, were barricaded in an apartment on the 500 block of Bancroft Street when police Detective Wayne Starr arrived with a warrant to search the premises for drugs, Robinson said.

When the men refused to admit him, Starr broke down the door and entered the apartment. He found that Vidrio and the other man had locked themselves into the apartment’s bedroom. The two men refused to come out of the room or to let Starr in, Robinson said.

Starr broke down the door and found Vidrio pointing a gun at him. Starr fired once, striking Vidrio in the arm, Robinson said.

Vidrio was taken to UCSD Medical Center where he identified himself as David Delgado. He was in fair condition, hospital officials said.

Vidrio’s companion was taken into custody and later released.

In a subsequent search of the apartment, police found unspecified amounts of cocaine and heroin and a second loaded handgun, Robinson said.
