3 Big Quakes Rock Australia
Three powerful earthquakes registering up to 7.3 on the Richter scale rocked a 2-million-square-mile area of the northern outback Friday, shaking buildings and causing frightened residents to flee in panic.
The quakes were among the most powerful to strike Australia in the last 100 years, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or severe damage.
The quakes--measuring in order 6.8, 7.3 and 7.0--were centered west of the central Northern Territory mining town of Tennant Creek, about 650 miles southeast of Darwin.
