Escondido 67, Carlsbad 54--Brooks Barnhard scored 19 points and Paul Baldwin 17 for Escondido (12-4, 5-1). Carlsbad trailed by six with 1:27 to play, but Escondido converted 6 of 7 free throws when Carlsbad had to resort to fouling. Luke Petterini scored 22 for Carlsbad (5-7, 2-4). Teammate Ron Helms added 11.

GROSSMONT

Santana 67, Granite Hills 66--Granite Hills’ half-court trap disrupted Santana in the fourth quarter, but the No. 3 Sultans (14-2, 8-1) held on to win. Granite Hills (8-6, 3-6) outscored Santana, 17-9, in the final period. It had two chances to tie the game with less than a minute to play and Santana leading by three. Tim Barry scored 20 and Stu Back had 14 for Santana. Sean Ruff had 21 for Granite Hills. Quentin Hollis added 14 for Granite Hills.

Helix 64, Monte Vista 61--Chris Carlson made both ends of a one-and-one in the final seconds to assure the victory for Helix (11-5, 4-5). Helix made only 15 of 32 free throws. Rob Ledford and Damon Roach scored 15 and 14 points for Helix. James Frazier scored 22 for Monte Vista (7-10, 4-5) and Scott Winne added 14.

Grossmont 59, El Capitan 52--Lance Williams scored 29 points for Grossmont (10-6, 6-3). Williams and Jason Foggiano, who scored 8 of his 16 points in the final quarter, made back-to-back three-pointers with less than four minutes to play as Grossmont broke a 48-48 tie. Jason Berkshire and Bryan Palmer scored 20 and 12 points for El Capitan (4-11, 2-7).

Crawford 82, San Diego 69--Lamont Grove, the county’s leading scorer, had 31 points on 13 of 21 shooting to lead Crawford (7-7, 2-1). Grove also had 9 rebounds, 8 steals and 5 assists. Crawford’s Tracy Halton scored 19 points, including 11 in the first quarter. Tim Mitchell scored 20 and Reynard Wells added 17 for San Diego (7-7, 1-2).

EASTERN

Patrick Henry 79, Mira Mesa 56--Collis Hunt scored 21 points for Patrick Henry, which took a 19-11 lead after the first quarter and never trailed. Terrence Hamilton added 17 points and 9 rebounds for Patrick Henry, which out rebounded Mira Mesa, 35-22. David Lee scored 23 points for Mira Mesa (9-6, 1-2). Tal Miller added 13 and Marc Ziegler had 11. Patrick Henry (10-6, 2-1) made 27 of 34 free throws to Mira Mesa’s 18 of 33.

Morse 51, Serra 40--Morse’s pressure defense finally took is toll in the third period as the seventh-ranked Tigers outscored Serra, 18-7. Willie Davis and Curtis Jones scored 15 points apiece to lead Morse (9-7, 1-2). Chris Ireland and Desi Dixon led Serra (5-9, 0-3) with 10 points apiece.

Madison 72, Point Loma 57--Jeff Harper scored 21 points to lead five Madison players in double figures. Robby Robinson and Jeff Alexander scored 14 points each and Andre Mitchell and Wesley Bertelsen added 10 each for fourth-ranked Madison (15-2, 3-0). Beau Pack came off the bench to score 18 points for Point Loma (11-7, 2-1).

PALOMAR

Fallbrook 57, Orange Glen 48--Mike West scored 25 points and Brian Rainey added 12 as Fallbrook took a 37-24 halftime lead and held on for the victory at Orange Glen. Dan Early scored 20 points and Cree Morris added 12 for Orange Glen (5-12, 0-5). Fallbrook is 5-8, 3-2.

Mt. Carmel 62, San Dieguto 47--Mt. Carmel went exclusively to a man defense in the second half as it expanded a 31-30 halftime lead at Mt. Carmel. Jack Minger, who led San Dieguito with 20 points, had just 6 in the second half. Eric Olander and Rich Donovan led Mt. Carmel (11-6, 3-2) with 16 points each. Shane Knight added 12 points and 15 rebounds.

WESTERN

Mission Bay 43, Clairemont 35--Mission Bay remained undefeated in league play with the victory at Clairemont. The game was even until the final four minutes when Mission Bay (6-7, 3-0) pulled away. Brett Grebing, who was 8 for 8 from the field and 6 for 6 from the free throw line, led Mission Bay with 24 points. Lamont Jackson led Clairemont (0-3, 4-11) with 22 points. Ray McDavid, Clairemont’s leading scorer, was held to 7 points on 3 for 23 shooting.

La Jolla 56, USDHS 51 (OT)--Adam Kleid scored all five of La Jolla’s points in overtime and finished with 11 points. Sean Rodgers scored 15 and David Berteaux added 13 for La Jolla (10-6, 2-1). Laurie Massa tied the game, 51-51, in regulation for the University of San Diego High School (4-10, 0-3) with a three-point shot at the buzzer. John Montali scored 15 and Massa had 12 for USDHS.

METRO CONFERENCE

Sweetwater 46, Bonita Vista 43-- Charles Starnes, who scored 13 points, made a key three-pointer for Sweetwater (9-10, 6-2), which trailed by two after the third quarter. John Sikute had 17 for Bonita Vista (0-16, 0-7).

Castle Park 73, Hilltop 70--Castle Park led 19-12 after the first quarter and never trailed. Hilltop’s Mark Dirksen scored a game-high 32 points. Cesar Gutierrez scored 18 points and Mike Ballarelli added 17 as Castle Park (12-7, 6-2) took over first place in the South Bay League. Hilltop is 9-11, 5-2.

Coronado 53, Marian 49--Jay Malott, the county’s No. 2 scorer, had 24 points to lead Coronado (5-10, 3-4) at Marian. Jessie McNeill added 12 for Coronado (4-11, 3-4).

GIRLS’ EASTERN

Point Loma 51, Madison 47--Top-ranked Point Loma outscored fifth-ranked Madison, 22-6, in the second quarter at Madison. Freshman Chris Drumm scored 10 of her 14 points during the second quarter as Point Loma (18-1, 3-0) erased an 18-10 deficit. Madison (9-5, 1-2) got within 50-47 with 2:13 to play but missed its final two shots. Monica Filer led Point Loma with 20 points and Drumm added 9 rebounds. Madison’s Kathy Weathers, the county’s No. 2 scorer, had 25 points and 8 rebounds.

GIRLS’ CENTRAL

Crawford 63, San Diego 46--Erica Kiser had 20 points and 11 rebounds for Crawford. Nikki Daniels scored 9 of her 15 points in the first quarter when Crawford (8-7, 3-0) took a 19-6 lead. Daniels also had 13 rebounds. Roya Bruce scored 11 for San Diego.
