College Roundup : Irvine Doubles Team Loses to USC in Tournament Final

Scott Melville and Eric Amend of USC defeated UC Irvine’s Mark Kaplan and Trevor Kronemann, 6-3, 7-5, in the men’s doubles final of the Indian Wells college invitational tournament Saturday.

The final, scheduled for last Sunday at Indian Wells but postponed because of rain, was held at the Lindborg Racquet Club in Huntington Beach.

In the men’s singles final, Robbie Weiss of Pepperdine defeated Melville, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

In PCAA men’s swimming:

Cal State Long Beach 110, UC Irvine 105--Irvine’s Brian Judd won two individual events, but the Anteaters dropped to 4-4 after the meet at Irvine.

Judd won the 500-yard freestyle in 4 minutes 45.38 seconds and the 1,000 freestyle in 9:49.1. He joined Scott McGihon, Mauro Machi and Rich Hayden on the winning 400 freestyle relay.

Irvine’s Nick Ro won the 200 breaststroke, Matt Wright won the 50 freestyle, and Tom Jordan won the three-meter diving.

In PCAA women’s swimming:

Cal State Long Beach 124, UC Irvine 91--Anteater Lisa Williams won the 500 freestyle in 5:21.26 and the 1,000 freestyle in 11:27.20 at Irvine. Diver Trishna Coleman took first place in the one- and three-meter events for Irvine (5-3).
