Governor to Speak at Rites Opening Centennial Period

LONG BEACH — This city’s nine-month centennial extravaganza will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Queen Mary and Spruce Goose. The opening ceremony will feature the presentation of a large birthday cake to city residents who are 100 years old.
Gov. George Deukmejian will speak at the event, which will include a commemoration of historical landmarks and music by the Long Beach Junior Concert Band.
After the ceremony and throughout the weekend, Shoreline Village will present a two-day centennial festival featuring music, entertainment, food and special events such as an 1880s-style bathing suit contest.
The centennial kickoff concludes Sunday with a 10-K run through Long Beach.
