A 32-year-old San Marcos man who led sheriff’s deputies on a five-minute, high-speed chase through Poway streets Tuesday was injured when his motorcycle collided with a car near Espola Road, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said.

The accident was the fourth since last week involving police chases. Three people have been killed--including two innocent bystanders--since Jan. 19.

Frank Michael Gomez, of the 700 block of Cerro Bonita, was listed in good condition Wednesday afternoon at Sharp Memorial Hospital with a broken leg, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The Sheriff’s Department said the chase began when Deputy Kirby Beyer tried to stop Gomez for driving with his lights off near the intersection of Poway and Garden roads at 7:49 p.m.

Gomez allegedly sped off, a Sheriff’s Department spokesman said, leading deputies on a six-mile chase. It ended at Valle Verde and Espola roads when his motorcycle collided with a car that was yielding to the sirens of a Sheriff’s Department car. The motorcycle skidded along the pavement.

The occupants of the car were not injured, the spokesman said.

Spokesman Greg Reynolds said Gomez was wanted on a felony, no-bail warrant for child abandonment.

On Jan. 19, a Poway woman was killed when a California Highway Patrol cruiser in pursuit of a motorcyclist crashed into her car in Kearny Mesa. A San Diego man was killed the next day when his car was hit broadside by another car being chased by police.

On Monday, a 36-year-old Chula Vista man was killed when his car overturned on an Interstate 805 off-ramp during a high-speed police chase.
