A Rancho Santa Fe doctor died Wednesday after he was struck by a car during an early-morning bicycle ride on Old Highway 101 in Encinitas.

Dr. Anthony Armino, 51, died at 8:45 a.m. at Sharp Memorial Hospital after suffering multiple head and chest injuries, according to Chuck Bolton, San Diego County deputy coroner. Armino was riding his bicycle south along the highway just north of Chesterfield Drive shortly before 5 a.m. when he was struck by a car driven by Jeffrey Henrichs of El Cajon, Bolton said. Henrichs was arrested by San Diego County sheriff’s deputies on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, Bolton said.

Armino, whose office was in Solana Beach, was extremely popular among the 2,000 families he treated, according to his secretary, Linda Rockey. His office was flooded with calls from patients and friends as word of the accident spread, Rockey said.
