Local News in Brief : Slain Suspect Identified
A robbery suspect shot and killed by Gardena police earlier this week has been identified as Yusef Jamal Brooks, 20, of Los Angeles.
Police said Brooks was stopped shortly after 9:20 p.m. Sunday after a woman had reportedly been robbed in front of a bar on West 135th Street. Officer Gary Lee Miller, 43, saw Brooks, who police said fit the robber’s description, and asked him to stop. Brooks crouched and pulled a gun from his waistband, police said.
The officer fired and struck Brooks once in each hand, in the leg and in the groin, Lt. Phil Shepherd said.
Brooks fled but was caught and arrested. A gun was found nearby. He was taken to Harbor/UCLA Medical Center, where he died, police said.
The shooting is under investigation by Gardena police and sheriff’s homicide detectives, police said.
