Los Angeles : Cal State Library Reopened
The library at Cal State Los Angeles, severely damaged in the Oct. 1 earthquake, was reopened for full use last week with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Although the damage, estimated at $22 million, has not been fully repaired, college spokesmen said the library’s 980,000 books are in place and shelves have been reinforced to withstand a quake of up to 7.5 on the Richter scale.
One student was killed and nearly half of the library’s books fell in the earthquake. Since then, parts of the library have been restored and opened in phases. During the restoration period, a van dubbed the “Hemingway Express” brought books from eight other schools for students’ temporary use.
