The State : 2nd Leap From Bridge Feared

Share

A young woman who survived a New Year’s Day leap from the Golden Gate Bridge is feared to have taken her life in a second jump from the span. Authorities have found a car belonging to Sara R. Birnbaum, 18, in a parking lot near the famed San Francisco bridge. Birnbaum, a former UCLA student from Piedmont, had left her car in the same area before her Jan. 1 jump. A witness told authorities that a blonde woman jumped from the bridge. But a Coast Guard search failed to turn up a body. The California Highway Patrol said that if the jumper was Birnbaum, it would be the first time a person attempted suicide twice from the bridge. Friends and acquaintances said Birnbaum had been disappointed over not being accepted to Stanford University and had difficulties in her short time at UCLA.
