The Venice Family Clinic has received a $400,000 contribution from the Milken Foundation to kick off a fund-raising campaign for expansion of the medical facility.

The clinic, which provides free medical service to poor families, plans a nearly threefold expansion to more than 15,000 square feet with 18 examination rooms.

Clinic officials hope to raise $1.9 million for the expansion, which is scheduled to begin in the spring.

The 18-year-old facility, 604 Rose Ave., handles 23,000 patient visits a year, twice the number three years ago, said Executive Director Fern Seizer. The expansion will enable the clinic to handle 40,000 patient visits annually, she added.
