San Diego City Councilman Ed Struiksma announced Friday that he won’t run for the mayor’s office or the 77th Assembly District seat, which is expected to come open if Assemblyman Larry Stirling runs for state Senate.
In a press release, Struiksma--who was long thought to be eyeing a challenge of Mayor Maureen O’Connor in her reelection bid this year--said he was backing down from any mayoral campaign because it would take “substantial financial support” to overcome the power of O’Connor’s incumbency.
Struiksma also said he would not make a bid for Stirling’s seat if the assemblyman runs for the seat being vacated by State Sen. Jim Ellis. Struiksma said he was stepping aside in any potential Assembly race to make way for San Diego City Councilwoman Gloria McColl, if she decides to run for the assembly.
Struiksma represents the city’s 5th District, which includes such burgeoning communities as Scripps Ranch and Mira Mesa.
