Tim Richmond Takes Another Drug Test

Tim Richmond, suspended from competition by NASCAR, Sunday denied using drugs and underwent a second drug test in an effort to clear himself.

Richmond, 32, was suspended Saturday after testing positive for drug use.

Richmond submitted another urine sample Saturday night. Results of the test probably won’t be known for at least two days.

“There’s been a mistake made on this drug test some way or another,” Richmond said. “I am not guilty.”

The native of Ashland, Ohio, has consistently denied rumors that drug use led to a serious bout with double pneumonia that limited him to eight NASCAR Winston Cup races in 1987.

NASCAR’s new policy calls for a drug test to be given to competitors, crew members or NASCAR officials if there is a “reasonable suspicion” of drug use.

All of those people must sign a release allowing NASCAR to test them at its discretion. A NASCAR spokesman said Richmond has been the only driver asked to take the test.
