Local News in Brief : City Gets Drug Proceeds
The West Covina Police Department received $1.9 million in forfeited drug proceeds Monday from federal officials who said it was the largest amount ever issued in the Los Angeles area.
Presenting a huge photocopy of the check to West Covina Police Chief Craig Meacham at a news conference, U.S. Atty. Robert Bonner said the money represents West Covina’s share of $2.4 million in drug proceeds seized from a Rowland Heights home in April, 1986. The remainder of the money goes into the U.S. Treasury.
The Federal Equitable Sharing Program, passed as part of the Comprehensive Crime Control Act of 1984, allows federal officials to share with local law enforcement any illicit proceeds seized in joint narcotics investigations.
