Share

The Metropolitan Water District will study whether to build small nuclear reactors around Southern California to desalt sea water for drinking.

The Los Angeles-based agency, which obtains the water used by most Southland residents, will spend $300,000 to study if the nuclear reactors are a feasible idea, General Manager Carl Boronkay said. Even if the idea is rated a good one, construction of such reactors is unlikely to occur before the turn of the century, he said.
