Seven people, including incumbent Robert E. White, are competing for two City Council seats in Norwalk. Mayor Margaret (Peg) Nelson, a 12-year member of the council, is not seeking reelection.
White, a 68-year-old retired physical education teacher, is running for his sixth term. Ralph Pontius, a 60-year-old city planning commissioner and print shop owner, is launching his third bid for a council seat.
Other contestants include Mike Mendez, 40, assistant director of recreation services for the City of Santa Fe Springs, and Jim Sweet, 58, a former planning commissioner and sales analyst for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Co.
Charles Belcher, John Echeveste and Louis Krebs are all making renewed attempts to get on the council. Belcher, a 43-year-old truck driver, has run twice before; Echeveste, a 63-year-old advertising salesman, ran in 1978 and 1980, and Krebs, a 42-year-old mechanic, ran in 1986.
