The state Department of Education said Thursday three school districts in the county are among statewide award winners for exemplary educational programs.

The Irvine Unified School District received a plaque for being among nine districts in the state judged to have “exemplary bilingual education programs,” the state Department of Education said.

Gil Lopez, of the state’s Office of Bilingual Education, judged the programs. Irvine Unified’s bilingual program, directed by Melodee Zamudio, features computer-assisted teaching of the limited-English-speaking students in grades one through six.
