Local News in Brief : Charges in Gang Killing

Share

A reputed gang member was charged Thursday with murder and attempted murder for a drive-by shooting that killed a 67-year-old woman as she sat in her wheelchair and wounded her grandson.

Darrell L. Moore, 19, was charged by the district attorney’s office with one count each of murder, shooting into an inhabited dwelling and possession of a firearm by a felon. Moore, previously convicted of possession of narcotics for sale, will not face the death penalty if convicted because prosecutors could not determine any applicable special circumstance allegations to file against him.

But he was charged with a relatively new allegation--shooting from a motor vehicle and causing death or great bodily injury--that could add five years to his prison sentence if he is convicted.

Moore is accused of driving to the South Los Angeles home of a rival gang member, Donald Shepherd, 20, Tuesday night and shooting him and his grandmother, Alma Lee Washington.
