Times Wins Award for Excellence
The Los Angeles Times won first place for general excellence among California’s largest daily newspapers Saturday in the California Newspaper Publishers Assn. annual better newspapers competition.
The Marin Independent Journal, the News Chronicle of Thousand Oaks and the Pittsburg Post Dispatch won CNPA’s general excellence awards in smaller circulation categories for dailies.
Top honors among California’s weekly newspapers in different circulation categories were won by the Chico News & Review, The La Costan of Carlsbad and the Del Mar Citizen.
Among dailies with more than 75,000 daily circulation, the Los Angeles Times was ranked first and the San Jose Mercury News second in general excellence.
In the 25,001-75,000 category, the Marin Independent Journal was followed by the Times Tribune of Palo Alto in second place and the Daily Review of Hayward, which won a merit award.
Ranked second behind the News Chronicle for general excellence among dailies between 10,001 and 25,000 circulation was the Salinas Californian.
In the under 10,000 circulation category, the Pittsburg Post Dispatch was followed by the Anaheim Bulletin in second place and The Dispatch of Gilroy, which won a merit award.
General excellence is the top award among 27 categories on which the CNPA judges California newspapers each year.
