Back to an Earlier Aspen

Jerry Hulse’s article on Aspen (Jan. 24) took me back to the summer of 1950 when I was there for its cultural program. Although the program was full, the pace was leisurely and you could sample whatever pleased you.

Also, the spirit of the great Albert Schweitzer was much in evidence. This remarkable man visited Aspen the year before to help launch the program at the invitation of the program’s founder, Walter Paepcke. There was quite a bit of partying then, especially at the gracious Hotel Jerome, but it was interspersed with serious dialogue on the fate of the world.
