Two hundred guards swinging clubs and lobbing tear gas stormed a city jail early today, crushing a riot by 550 inmates who ransacked cellblocks in a three-hour insurrection to protest conditions.

Four guards and five prisoners were injured, none seriously, said city Correction Commissioner Richard Koehler, who was on Rikers Island in the East River, the scene of the riot, through much of the night. Koehler said inmates complained about what they said were frequent and rough searches by jail guards.
