College Baseball : Arizona State Stops Chapman, 10-6

Arizona State scored four runs in the first inning and two in the second and held on for a 10-6 win over Chapman College Wednesday at Tempe, Ariz.

The Sun Devils, ranked third nationally by Baseball America, were led by Kevin Higgins, who went 5 for 5 with a double and 2 RBIs. Arizona State (16-1) won its eighth straight.

Chapman (6-5-1) scored once in the third. Then in the fifth, the Panthers knocked out Sun Devil starter Gordy Farmer with five runs on five hits, including doubles by Bucky Bollinger and Troy Barnhart.

Cal Poly Pomona 1, UC Irvine 0 (11 innings)--With two out in the 11th, Pomona’s Jeff Goldback doubled home Dan Shannon from first for the game’s only run. Irvine’s Craig Brink pitched 9 innings, giving up 6 hits, and lowered his earned-run average to 1.55. Jeff Oberdank, batting .441, was 2 for 4 for Irvine.

Cal State Fullerton 13, Cal State Northridge 0--Longo Garcia, a senior right-hander, pitched a seven-hitter to lead Fullerton (6-6). Keith Kaub had a three-run homer and Jason Rolish had three RBIs for the Titans.

Shane Flores and Brent Mayne had three hits each for Fullerton.

Northridge (2-7) had five errors, including two in the fifth inning, when the Titans scored eight runs on only five hits.
