Santa Monica : 2 Compete for Rent Board Post

The city’s Rent Control Board has narrowed the field of candidates for a new administrator to two people, a spokeswoman said.

The board declined to reveal the names of the two finalists until the other applicants are notified.

The five-member board plans to have final interviews with the candidates next week, she said.

The board fired administrator Howell Tumlin last November, saying it wanted to move in a “new direction.” Tumlin had held the post for nearly eight years.

After sifting through a pool of about 90 applicants, the board selected six semifinalists last month.

In another development, the board said it used emergency spending cuts, including a hiring freeze and delays on purchasing, to meet its budget after revenues fell unexpectedly below projections.

The shortfall was blamed in part on an unanticipated number of rental units that were exempted from payment of rent control registration fees.
