THE COLLEGES : Community College Roundup : Rancho Santiago Opens Tournament With 11-4 Win Over Arizona Pima

Wade Clester had two hits and three RBIs to lead Rancho Santiago College to an 11-4 victory over Arizona Pima in the opening round of the Casey Stengel baseball tournament Thursday at Rancho Santiago.

Rancho Santiago (5-0) scored seven runs in the seventh inning, including a solo home run by Mike Gonzales. Clester had a two-run single, and Todd Lloyd singled in a another run during the seventh. Lloyd and Tim Reynolds had two hits each, and Reynolds also had two walks and an RBI.

Dave Tellers pitched the first seven innings to get the victory for Rancho Santiago, which is the top-ranked team in Southern California.

In the Modesto tournament:

Fullerton 3, Skyline 1--Mark Keifer allowed six hits but needed ninth-inning help from Brad Hopper to get the victory in the first-round game. Keifer (3-0), who had 10 strikeouts, allowed a run in the ninth with one out. He was then replaced by Hopper with runners on second and third. Hopper, a sophomore right-hander, struck out the next two hitters for his first save.

Mike Oziminski had two hits and scored a run, and Scott Einhorn had two hits and an RBI for Fullerton (5-2-1), which scored in the second, third and fifth.

In the Mt. San Antonio tournament:

Saddleback 7, MiraCosta 2--Danny Blancett (1-0) pitched an eight-hitter and had 10 strikeouts for Saddleback in the second-round game. Shortstop Doug Barron had two hits, including a home run and three RBIs, and Matt Lundin had two hits and two RBIs for Saddleback (4-2).
