Borja Scores 3 Goals, Brcic Stops 23 Shots to Help Lazers to 6-4 Victory Over Steamers

Chico Borja scored 3 goals, 2 on headers, and goalkeeper David Brcic stopped 23 shots Friday night to lead the Lazers past the St. Louis Steamers, 6-4, in a Major Indoor Soccer League game.

Thompson Usiyan added a goal and an assist for Los Angeles (15-16), which had lost 9 of its previous 13 games.

John Bain scored two goals, and Poli Garcia had three assists for St. Louis (10-24), which has lost 12 of its last 13 and has the worst record in the MISL.

Slobo Ilijevski lost for the 10th consecutive time in his bid to become the first goalkeeper in the league’s 10-year history to win 150 games.

Gerry Gray gave St. Louis a 1-0 lead 23 seconds into the second quarter. But Borja tied the score when he headed in a pass from Michael Collins at 11:39 of the second period.

Daryl Doran then gave St. Louis a 2-1 advantage with 39 seconds left in the quarter.

The Lazers again tied the score at 3:12 of the third period on a goal by Chris Whyte, then took a 3-2 lead when Borja deflected in a pass from Chris Chueden on a power play at 5:23.

Borja headed in a pass from Paul Child at 8:01 to give the Lazers a 4-2 lead, but Bain countered 39 seconds later to cut the Steamers’ deficit to 4-3.
