WINTER OLYMPICS : Top Polish Hockey Player Said to Have Tested Positive for Drugs

Jaroslaw Morawiecki of the Polish hockey team has tested positive for illegal drugs, his coach said.

The International Olympic Committee said it would not discuss the situation until this morning.

“Yes, we know about it,” Poland Coach Leszek Lejczyk said at the news conference that followed his team’s 4-1 loss to Switzerland on Saturday night. Morawiecki didn’t play in the game, apparently on IOC instructions.

“One of our players, Morawiecki, tested positive for illegal drugs,” Lejczyk said. “We don’t know what the decision will be.

“I really don’t know what kind of drug was involved,” added Lejczyk, who called the 23-year-old Morawiecki one of the best players in Polish hockey history.

After each Olympic hockey game, a player on each team is randomly selected for testing.

Since 1981, Morawiecki has scored 110 goals in 180 games while playing in Poland’s top league. A national team member since 1984, he has scored 34 goals in 49 games.

In three Olympic games in which he has played, Morawiecki scored two of Poland’s seven goals. In Tuesday’s 1-1 tie with Sweden, Morawiecki scored the only goal.
