PHOENIX — Bruce Babbitt’s last stop on his way home from 18 months of campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination was to tell a cheering crowd at his national campaign headquarters that it was good to be home.
“I got a call a week ago from a neighbor of mine who said: ‘Bruce, you may be hot stuff out there in the rest of the United States, running for President of the United States, debating on television all the time, but you better get home because your fence is falling down and the dog is wreckin’ my lawn,’ ” Babbitt told about 1,000 supporters.
Babbitt, the former governor of Arizona, officially dropped out of the race Thursday after disappointing primary and caucus showings in New Hampshire and Iowa.
Babbitt said he and his wife, Hattie, were going to spend some time getting reacquainted and re-establishing their roots in Arizona.
As to his future plans, he said he has not ruled out anything except running for governor of Arizona.
