The second state prison to open in the San Joaquin Valley in just over a year received its first prisoners today. More than 40 minimum-security prisoners arrived at Corcoran State Prison by bus before 9 a.m., a spokeswoman said. More prisoners are expected on Wednesday, and up to 114 may be there by the end of the week.

In January, 1987, the state opened a prison at Avenal, also in Kings County. Both Corcoran and Avenal had been primarily farming communities and sought the prisons to diversify their economies.
