Local News in Brief : Drop-Off in AIDS Cases

Share

Los Angeles County health officials reported 111 new cases of AIDS during the month of January, raising the total confirmed cases of acquired immune deficiency syndrome in the county to 4,354, Supervisor Ed Edelman said Monday.

The number of AIDS cases in January was down from the 174 reported during December, but Edelman said that health officials have attributed the drop-off to a county nurses strike that resulted in a backlog of cases that still need to be investigated.

All of the new January cases involved adults, Edelman said. Of the total AIDS cases reported in the county, 25 have been pediatric cases. In all, 2,722 of those afflicted with AIDS have died, according to county health officials.
