A 44-year-old Garden Grove man recently released from state prison was found dead Monday evening, slumped over his auto’s steering wheel with five bullet wounds in his head, authorities said.

Edward Thomas Romero had parked his auto in an apartment carport at the Buena Clinton housing project in the 12500 block of Morningside Ave., Lt. Scott Hamilton said. Police said they didn’t know why he parked there.

A resident at the apartments saw him slumped in the car at about 5 p.m. and called police, Hamilton said.

No residents reported hearing any shots or a fight earlier in the day, and police have no suspects or motive, he said.

Romero had been in and out of California state prisons on a variety of charges since 1978, said a spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections. Last month, he was discharged from the California Institute for Men in Chino after serving time for a robbery conviction in Orange County, she said.
