SportsScope : Golden Eagle Women Cagers Take Aim at Playoffs in Final Two Season Games

The Cal State Los Angeles women’s basketball team, which started the week tied for fourth with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn., will try to wrap up its first-ever berth in the conference post-season tournament when they face Cal State Dominguez Hills tonight and Chapman Saturday.

The Golden Eagles, 4-6 in conference play and 12-12 overall, visit Dominguez Hills at 7:30 tonight and entertain Chapman at 5:45 p.m. Saturday. Dominguez Hills enters this week in sixth place in the CCAA at 3-7 and 10-15 overall while Chapman is third at 5-5 and 14-9.

Cal State L.A. has been headed by a front line that includes 6-0 center Lupe Quintana, 6-0 forward Tina Slatinsky and 5-10 forward Sue Doody. Quintana, the top rebounder in the CCAA is averaging 14.4 points and 11.1 rebounds. Slatinsky is averaging 12 points and 6.3 rebounds and Doody 11.6 points and 7 rebounds.

The Golden Eagles used Quintana’s 24 points and 12 rebounds to defeat San Luis Obispo, 74-66, last week.

Dominguez Hills, crushed by conference leader Cal Poly Pomona (69-39) in its last game, has been paced by 5-6 guard Angel Wells and 6-2 center Kathy Goggin. Wells is averaging 10.9 points and Goggin 8.8 points and 7.1 rebounds.

Chapman, which rolled to an 81-58 win over Cal State L.A. in their last meeting has one of the premier players in the conference in 5-4 guard Karan Polk. The senior is averaging 17.8 points, 6.1 assists and 4.1 rebounds. Another top player for the Panthers is 5-8 guard Corine Sandfry, who averages 12.5 points.

Having already clinched its seventh consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Assn. title, the Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team will try to conclude an undefeated conference season when it visits Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at 7:30 tonight in San Luis Obispo.

The Broncos, ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division II, will take records of 11-0 in conference play and 23-3 overall into the game while San Luis Obispo is 4-6 in the CCAA and 10-13 overall.

Pomona rolled to a 78-60 victory over San Luis Obispo on Feb. 4 in Pomona. The Broncos have played even stronger on the road, where they have a 12-1 record.

The Broncos may be shorthanded for the game since 5-5 junior point guard Cathy Gooden has been suffering from the flu and is not expected to play. Gooden, the leading scorer in the conference, is averaging 19.1 points, 4.5 assists and 4.0 steals.

Gooden did not play in Pomona’s game against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday and the visiting Broncos still ran away with a 69-39 win.

Without Gooden, the Broncos figure to rely on 6-2 center Niki Bracken and 6-1 forward Marcine Edmonds for most of their scoring. Bracken averages 15.8 points and 7.2 rebounds and Edmonds 15 points and 5.6 rebounds.

The Broncos are also led by 5-8 senior guard Paula Tezak, the only senior on the team’s 12-player roster. She averages 7.2 assists, 7.2 rebounds and 3.3 steals.

San Luis Obispo, which entered the week tied with Cal State Los Angeles in the race for the fourth and final berth in next week’s CCAA post-season tournament, has been led by guard Jody Hasselfield and forward Russia Madden. Hasselfield is averaging 15.2 points and 4.8 assists and Madden 12.7 points and 10 rebounds.

Azusa Pacific University is not expected to have any problems when it hosts Christ College of Irvine in its regular-season finale in women’s basketball at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Azusa.

The Cougars enter the game with a record of 7-4 in the Golden State Athletic Conference and 18-7 overall while Christ has struggled to marks of 2-9 in the GSAC and 7-19 overall.

It will also give Azusa Pacific a final tune-up game before the start of the NAIA District III playoffs next week.

The Cougars have a three-game win streak. They have been led by 5-10 sophomore forward Holly Ingersoll, averaging 13.3 points in conference play. Ingersoll was named the conference player of the week after scoring 50 points in three games last week.

Two other leaders for the Cougars are junior forward Sally Cohenour, who averages 12.8 points, and senior center Tina Ray, who averages 8.9 rebounds.

Pasadena has been selected as the host city for the 1988 National Public Parks Tennis Championships July 31 through Aug. 7. The event, sponsored by the National Public Parks Tennis Assn., is the oldest amateur tennis tournament in the nation.
