Local News in Brief : Fight for Building Ends

Share

Historic preservationists dropped their fight Wednesday to save the earthquake-damaged Harvey Apartments, the oldest commercial building in Whittier.

Last week, Save the Harvey Assn. obtained a temporary restraining order to block further demolition of the century-old building, which wrecking crews had been working on for about two weeks. City officials were told of the order, but the demolition contractor did not get the message and spent most of Saturday tearing down the building.

The demolition work on Saturday “put the building over the edge,” said David Dickerson, the lawyer for Save the Harvey Assn., and the group decided to drop its bid for the restraining order. City officials said demolition will proceed this week.
