Local News in Brief : Off-Road Vehicle Park

Share

Los Angeles County will apply to the state for $16 million to acquire and develop 606 acres near Santa Clarita as the county’s first off-road vehicle park.

After studying more than 50 possible locations for the park in the past three years, county officials selected Whitney Canyon, near the Antelope Valley Freeway and San Fernando Road, east of Newhall.

The site, owned by Watt Industries, would be open to all types of off-road vehicles, including motorcycles, three-wheel all-terrain vehicles, dune buggies and four-wheel-drive Jeeps.

Preliminary plans for the canyon park call for eight miles of riding trails, two 20-acre motocross tracks, a smaller bicycle “motocross” track, an amphitheater for club meetings and parking for 1,000 vehicles.

The county will apply for the funds by March 1, begin an environmental impact study in April and draw up a master plan for the park, the Department of Parks and Recreation said Wednesday.
