Behind the Cuts in Postal Service

Share

I was very interested to see the article (Feb. 14) recounting the trials of Valley residents discovering that Saturday retail postal service had been all but discontinued.

As a letter carrier, Saturday was fun for me too. People asking how many stamps to use, where they could find an open office, but mostly “Why?”

What an interesting question! The impact is obvious on those who must have that sixth day available to conduct their postal business. I really don’t think that many people realize that disruption of the Postal Service operation is due solely to a bit of legislation that addresses the national debt in fairly feeble fashion, compared to the amount of daily inconvenience soon to be inflicted on every one of us.

I’d really like to see an article explaining the “why” of all this, including the underlying story of the relationship between intentionally downgrading service and the desire to privatize postal delivery.
