San Diego Sports et Cetera : USIU Completes Sweep of Anchorage

The United States International University hockey team has done its job. Now it’s up to the NCAA.

The Gulls defeated Alaska-Anchorage, 9-4, Saturday night to complete their season with a 23-13 record. They ran off eight consecutive victories at the end and won 18 of their last 22.

The strong finish is expected to be enough to help USIU earn an at-large berth in the postseason tournament. Bids will be extended March 13 by the NCAA.

USIU led, 2-1, after one period, then iced the game with six goals in the second.

Jim Hau scored twice and had two assists to set a USIU season scoring record with 58 points. Jeff Dobek held the mark with 56 in 1985-86.

TRACK

James Payton of Point Loma Nazarene College wasted no time in qualifying for the NAIA national championships as he threw the hammer 178-feet 3-inches to lead the Crusader men’s track team nonconference victories over Redlands and UC San Diego at Point Loma Saturday.

Mike Maynard won the 1,500- (4:05.78) and 800- (2:00.35) meter events for Pont Loma, which finished with 81 points. Redlands finished with 80 and UC San Diego had 32.

Suzanne Johansson won the 100-meter high hurdles (15.15) and the 400 meters (59.20) to lead the Point Loma Nazarene women’s team. PLNC scored 69 points, Redlands was second with 53 and UC San Diego finished with 42.

BASEBALL

John Wiggs struck out 12 to lead Florida to an 11-4 victory over San Diego State at Florida.

Jeff Barry and John Anderson were both 3 for 4 to lead the Aztecs (8-6) Florida (10-4) led 8-2 after four innings.

Kyle Abbott struck out six to lead UC San Diego to a 7-1 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in the first game of a nonconference doubleheader at San Bernardino Saturday.

Cal State San Bernardino (8-1-1) won the second game, 12-4, behind solo home runs by John Cooper and Chris Murphy. Eric Larson (4-0) was the winning pitcher for San Bernardino and Mike Morgan (1-1) took the loss.

Gary Fessia had a solo home run and was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs to lead UCSD (7-2) in the first game. Fessia was 6 for 9 with 4 RBIs on the day.

Point Loma Nazarene swept a doubleheader from The Masters college for its first victories of the season at Point Loma Saturday.

PLNC (2-10) rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth to win the first game, 8-7, and a two-run single in the fifth by John Danis gave the Crusaders the victory the second, 3-2.

Seven home runs were hit in the first game as the winds were blowing at the Crusader field. Eric Beagles had two solo home runs for The Masters (4-8) in game one and finished with three home runs for the day.

WOMEN’S GOLF

United States International University is in seventh place after 36 holes o f the Patty Sheehan Invitational at Fort Ord, Calif.

Texas and Arizona State are tied for first at 614. USIU is at 629 and San Diego State is 11th at 642.

Dana Losland of San Jose State and Michiko Hittori of Texas are tied for the individual lead at 147. Susan Shapcott is at 156 to lead the Gulls.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Keba Phipps had 18 kills and Kim Oden added 14 to lead the San Diego-based United States women’s volleyball team to a 15-6, 16-14, 7-15, 15-4 victory over Brazil Saturday night at Laramie, Wyoming.

The U.S. leads the five-match series 2-0. Caren Kemner had 11 kills and 7 blocks for the U.S. and Deitre Collins added 7 blocks.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Southern California College came back from an 11-point halftime deficit to defeat host Pt. Loma Nazarene, 104-89, Saturday night. Center Mike Lightfoot scored 26 and guard Todd Dixon 25 for Southern California College (17-13). Guard Jon Ekeroth had 20 and guard Miguel Gutierrez 18 for Pt. Loma Nazarene (10-19).

Russ Heicke scored 32 points to help United States International defeat Florida International, 105-93, at Golden Hall. Mike Lofty scored a career-high 26 for FIU (8-27). For USIU (10-18), which led at the half, 50-43, Dexter Magee had 14 to lead three other double-figure scorers.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Ann Duffy scored 17 points to lead Point Loma Nazarene College to a 69-42 victory over Southern California College in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Point Loma Saturday night.

PLNC (21-10, 8-4) hosts Biola at 7:30 p.m. in a first-round game of the NAIA District III championships Monday.

Shannon Anderson added 16 points against Southern California (10-18, 0-12). PLNC led 35-20 at the half.

SOFTBALL

UCSD got two hits apiece from Patty Hurt, Michelle Mundee, Tracey Kehr and Debra Callabresi to beat Cal State San Bernardino, 6-2, in the second game to split a doubleheader Saturday. San Bernardino won the opener, 6-5. Pitcher Stacie Sasaki won her fourth game for visiting UCSD (7-3).
